The Human Side of AI-Powered HR

How the Top Gen AI Use Cases Have Shifted: from Tech to Human-Centric

There’s something deeply fascinating happening in the world of AI right now—something that tells a bigger story than just “smarter machines.” It’s about how we, as people, are starting to use AI not just as a tool, but as a kind of digital companion, a helper in our personal lives, our minds, and our well-being.

Top 10 use cases in Gen AI

I came across an insightful chart recently on HBR (you can see it above) listing the shift in top 10 generative AI (Gen AI) use cases from 2024 to 2025. It struck a chord, not because it showed the expected rise of code generation or text editing—but because it reflected something more human.

What changed? And why it matters, and how tools like ChatGPT are helping us not just do more, but be more.

1. Therapy/Companionship (#1 in 2025)

Last year, this was in the #2 spot. Now it’s the most common use for Gen AI. Why? Because we’re craving more emotional support—and AI is meeting us where we are. Tools like ChatGPT are being used to talk through feelings, manage stress, and just have someone “there” 24/7. It’s not about replacing real therapists, but it is about reducing loneliness, offering reflection, and helping us feel seen.

2. Organizing My Life (New #2 Entry)

This is a brand-new use case, but wow, what a needed one. Life is messy. Between tasks, calendars, notes, and habits, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. AI is stepping in not just as a digital assistant, but a personal life coach. With ChatGPT, people are setting routines, prioritizing goals, and even drafting weekly grocery lists.

More than ever there is a need to detox our busy and distracted lives.

3. Finding Purpose (New #3 Entry)

Let this sink in: “finding purpose” is now the third most common AI use case. This says so much about where we are culturally. We’re seeking meaning. Tools like ChatGPT are helping users explore career transitions, values, and long-term fulfillment through journaling prompts, reflective conversations, and even personalized life path advice.

4. Enhanced Learning

Rising up from #8 to #4, learning is still a key area. But what’s different now is the how. It’s no longer just about learning facts—it’s about understanding deeply, in ways that are personalized and adaptive. ChatGPT acts like a tutor who adjusts to your pace, encourages curiosity, and brings empathy to the process of growth.

Appropriate prompt engineering, memory about your preferences makes all the differences.

5. Generating Code (for Pros)

While this was a top request in 2024, it’s now shifted to a more specialized, professional lane. Developers are using Gen AI to boost productivity and solve problems faster. It’s like having a brainstorming partner who gets your coding style and helps accelerate your workflow.

6. Generating Ideas

Once the #1 use case, idea generation is still essential—but it’s no longer at the core of our emotional needs. Instead, it’s one of many creative superpowers AI enhances. Whether you’re brainstorming content, business ideas, or even birthday party themes, ChatGPT is a go-to idea tool.

7. Fun and Nonsense

Sometimes we forget: play is powerful. That’s why fun and nonsense—yes, silly poems, quirky jokes, even games—still hold strong. We don’t always need utility; sometimes, we just need a laugh. That’s human. And AI gets it.

8. Improving Code (for Pros)

This is a nuanced shift: not just generating code, but refining it. Developers are using AI for best practices, optimization, and troubleshooting. It’s less about shortcuts, more about mastery.

9. Creativity

Creativity hasn’t disappeared; it’s just become more integrated. Whether writing music, generating visual art, or crafting new business ideas, AI like ChatGPT is unlocking our inner artist—even when we don’t see ourselves as one.

10. Healthier Living

This new use case is beautifully timely. From building better sleep habits to meal planning and mindfulness, AI is becoming a holistic coach. And not in a robotic “do 10 pushups” way—but in a thoughtful, tailored, compassionate way.

What’s Dropped—and Why It Matters

Some use cases like “Specific Search” and “General Advice” dropped off the top 10. This doesn’t mean they’re not useful—it just means we’re evolving in how we want to engage. We’re not just looking for answers anymore. We’re looking for partnership. Dialogue. Growth. Personalization.

The real story here is not just about what AI can do—it’s about what we need from it.

So, What Does This Shift Tell Us?

This chart isn’t just a trend snapshot. It’s a mirror. We’re moving from purely technical tasks to emotional and personal support. That’s profound.

As someone who cares deeply about how humans and technology intersect, I find this shift incredibly hopeful. AI isn’t just a productivity tool anymore. It’s becoming a tool for personal development—for building lives that feel more balanced, more fulfilled, and more aligned.

And let’s be clear: tools like ChatGPT aren’t perfect. They’re evolving. But they are helping. Whether that’s through journaling prompts, daily planners, empathetic responses, or thoughtful guidance, AI is stepping into a more intimate, thoughtful role in our lives.

Where Do We Go From Here?

If 2024 was the year of “doing more,” 2025 looks like the year of “being more.”

For those of us building teams, leading organizations, or just trying to make sense of the world—it’s a powerful reminder: people don’t just need efficiency. They need meaning. They don’t just want tools. They want support.

And Gen AI, surprisingly and beautifully, is rising to meet that call.

Let’s use that power wisely.
